The Padre Himalaya tour

Tour description: We meet in Sorède, at Place du Christ. From there we follow the path all the way to the top where we first get to Chapel Notre Dame du Château. We'll get back to the chapel, but first we go a little bit further to the ruins of the Château d'Ultrera and have a good look around before we go to the site where Padre Himalaya built a solar concentrator in 1900, a pioneering acheivement in the quest for harnessing the energy fromthe sun. This is where we have our picnic, unless we decide to wait until we get back to the chapel where there are tables and benches for a tad more comfort. At the end we walk back down the same way we came.

Distance: Approximaley 8 kilometres

Uphill: 410 metres

Downhill: 410 metres

Highest point: 480 metres

Duration: Approximately 3 hours walking + 1-2 hours spent enjoying the sites, views and the picnic  

Difficulty: This trip is relatively easy, the climb is not very steep and the paths are generally nice, but rocky in places. Sure-footedness required.

What to bring: You will have to bring your own drinks. The chapel is open during July and August and they usually sell a small selection of drinks and snacks, so you may want to bring some cash (no cards accepted) 

What to wear: Wear appropriate footwear and dress according to the forecasted weather.

The picnic: You will be served an "alfresco" meal consisting of something savoury and something sweet. Exactly what, will vary, but my aim is that no one leaves hungry. Let me know right away if you have any allergies I should be aware of.

Randonée des trois fontaines

Tour description: We meet in Laroque des Albères by the entrance to the Church of St. Felix. We walk out of town and follow a gravel road until we get to Font dels Simiots where we leave the road and enter a path which takes us on a lovely walk through the woods until we get to Font de la Vernosa. We'll have our picnic around there. Afterwards, we follow the path along the mountainside, with amazing views, back to the gravel road and further back to Laroque des Albères. 

Distance: Approximaley 9 kilometres

Uphill: 420 metres

Downhill: 420 metres

Highest point: 500 metres

Duration: Approximately 3 hours walking + 1-2 hours spent enjoying the sites, views and the picnic

A coastal walk from Porte Vendres to Banyuls sur Mer

Tour description: We meet in Porte Vendres, by the harbour, before we walk to the beach at Ansa de l'Espeluga. There we enter more rocky and mountaineus terrain towards Cap Béar. From there we follow the coast all the way to Banyuls sur Mer. From Banyuls we take the bus back to Porte Vendres. You can, of course, stay in Banyuls for as long as you want, it's a very nice town with a great beach.    

Distance: 10 kilomtres

Uphill: 190 metres

Downhill: 190 metres

Highest point: 110 metres

Duration: Approximately 3 hours walking + 1-3 hours spent enjoying the sites, views, baches and the picnic

Collioure to Fort Saint Elme

Tour description: We meet up in Collioure and walk to the 16th century fortress called Fort Saint Elme. The we explore the fortress and the museum (optional). Afterwards we find a picnic spot with a great view. At the end, we walk back down to Collioure.

Racou beach to Collioure

Tour description: From the beach at Racou, we walk along clifftops and beaches to the town Collioure. We find a nice picnic spot along the way and enjoy the beauty of this coastline. In Collioure you can decide to stay and explore this magnificent town or you can walk back with me and end the trip with a swim at Racou beach.

Laroque des Albères to Balma del Moro

Tour description: We meet in Laroqu des Albères, by the entrance to the St. Felix church. We walk out of town and follow the paths all the way to Balma del Moro. Balma del Moro is a very well preserved Dolmen, a burial site which was in use around 4000 years ago. We'll have our picnic in these historical surroundings before we walk back to Laroque on partially a differnt path.

Distance: 10 kilometres return

Uphill: 480

Highest point: 590 

Duration: approximately 3 hours 30 minutes walking + 1-2 hours spent enjoying the sites, views and the picnic

Laroque des Albères til Puig Neulós

Tour description: We meet in Laroque des Albères, by the entrance to the St. Felix church. From there we walk, mostly on forest paths, to the highest peak in the Albères mountains. From Puig Neulós we'll have fantastic views to France on one side and to Spain on the other side. Just accross the border to Spain, there is a 17th century ice house or snow well which is hidden away in between trees and bushes. A very interesting place to visit.

Distance: 15 kilometres return

Uphill: 1190

Downhill: 1190

Highest point: 1220

Duration: approximately 6 hours 30 minutes walking + 1-3? hours spent enjoying the sites, views and the picnic

Difficulty: This trip is long and with a nearly 1200 metres incresea in elevation. The paths are generally nice, but rocky in places. Sure-footedness and reasonable fitness required.
